We are seeking an environmental economist to work across the economics and agri-environment areas, and thus contribute to the School's research agenda in Sustainable Food Systems and Policy.
Expertise and leadership regarding the influence of economics, behaviour and policy at the interface between the farming and ecological systems that contribute to food production is essential.
You will have:
  • an ability to carry out high quality academic research that contributes to positive societal, environmental , and/or economic impact
  • a record of publishing in highly regarded journals
  • a desire and capability for working within or leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • presentation and communication skills required to teach on our diverse programmes

We are taking a unique opportunity to create a world-leading, interdisciplinary centre investigating the consequences of environmental change and the mitigation and management of its effects. Building on the existing academic strengths of the University of Exeter, the £30 million Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) will focus on undertaking significant cutting-edge research in finding solutions to problems of environmental change, and the application of an ecosystem services approach. There will be three major themes: Clean technologies, Natural environment, and Social science. The initiative is funded with a £22.9 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund and £6.6 million from the South West of England Regional Development Agency.
We are looking to appoint two professors in the area of natural environment, to complement existing research strengths and build on strong links with local environmental businesses and organisations and the European Centre for the Environment & Human Health. We are particularly interested in research leaders in biodiversity science or in  ecological/ecosystem/landscape processes - including research with relevance to agriculture, conservation biology, land use and disease control, and other areas of environmental management.

Research Associate (Part-time) Development of ICPMS Analytical Capability

Applications are invited for the above post based within the Division of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, School of Biosciences, at the University Park campus.
The duties of the successful candidate will include the operation of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICPMS), for biological and geochemical assays, and development of improved techniques for multi-element analysis.  Routine work will also involve sample acquisition and preparation, data processing procedures and liaising closely with 'non-user' clients.
Candidates should have a BSc in an appropriate chemical, geochemical or biological science.  Practical experience with ICPMS operation is vital.
Salary will be within the range £24,273 - £26,523 (pro-rata) per annum depending on skills and experience. Hours of work are 4 per week. This post will be offered on a fixed- term contract for a period of 36 months.

A Research Consultant is required for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the University of Reading's School of Agriculture, Policy and Development and Promar International Ltd.  Promar International Ltd is a farm and agri-food consultancy business, part of Genus plc, which specialises in research and consultancy both in the UK and worldwide.  You would be based at the company's headquarters in Nantwich, Cheshire.
The 33 month project aims to develop research and analytical techniques that can be used to improve the productivity and effectiveness of Promar's commercial rural, sustainability and food based consultancy business.
You will be a Graduate or Post Graduate in a relevant subject (agriculture/food related) with a minimum 2.1 or Merit with quantitative skills in data analysis.  You will have an understanding of the UK farming and food industry, and its future challenges, plus an understanding of farm financial issues and data gathering and research techniques.  The successful candidate will have a commercial attitude and a practical approach to finding solutions.  You will have good analytical abilities and will be self-motivated.  You will have the ability to work well in a team and embrace change. Good communication and leadership skills are required as, for example the role may involve travelling to various farms not easily accessible using public transport therefore, a clean UK driving license is preferable.
The package includes a good base salary, a technical and personal training allowance of £6,000 and the opportunity to study for a higher degree with the potential to gain a PhD (if appropriate, and at a reduced or no cost to you).

Jobs of CCAFS Scenarios Officer School of Geography and the Environment, Environmental Change Institute University of Oxford

Applications are invited for a Scenarios Officer position to work on developing scenarios for agriculture and food security for the CGIAR research programme, “Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security” (http://www.ccafs.cgiar.org/).
CCAFS is a major collaborative endeavour between the international agricultural (http://www.cgiar.org/) and global environmental change (http://www.essp.org/) research communities, and their respective partners. Research will be aimed at overcoming the additional threats posed by a changing climate to achieving food security, enhancing livelihoods and improving environmental management in the developing world. The scenarios project of CCAFS will be coordinated by a Scenarios Officer based in the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford. Working under the oversight of a Scenarios Advisory Group and working with and reporting to the ECI-based CCAFS Scenarios Leader, the CCAFS Scenarios Officer will coordinate and promote scenario development for each of the three initial CCAFS regions. This will include:
  • Liaising closely with the CCAFS Regional Facilitators to identify and involve appropriate stakeholders in the scenario exercises.
  • Identifying potential partners for building and sustaining regional scenarios networks.
  • Liaising with a wide range of stakeholders from the research, business and donor communities, regional organisations, NGOs, civil society and the media.
  • Developing methods and approaches for linking regional scenarios to global and local levels.
  • Collaborating with the quantitative and qualitative modelling communities.
  • Assisting in financial planning for scenarios activities and helping to monitor project expenditure and sub-contracts.
  • Reporting regularly to and acting as Secretary for the Scenarios Advisory Group.
You will have a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in agricultural and/or environmental and/or social sciences; you must have relevant experience in scenario development related to climate change, agriculture and food security; and demonstrated competency in communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, including extensive ability to motivate, inspire and promote teamwork through negotiation and consensus-building. A good working knowledge of French would be a major advantage. The post will require frequent and extensive international travel.
It is hoped that the successful applicant will start by 1 April 2011. Overall the project is envisaged as three years. While current funding allows the post to be offered initially for a 12 month period, there is a very strong likelihood of continued funding for years 2 and 3 of the project. A secondment would also be welcomed.
